Practice Nurses

Other Clinical Staff

Nurses are playing an increasingly important role in the provision of healthcare to patients in doctor's surgeries, not only dealing with dressing and injections, but supporting GPs by providing advice, support and specialist care to a wide range of patients from all sections of our community.

The nursing team at Park Leys is made up of our Practice Nurse Coordinator, Joy Stubbs, Practice Nurses Julie Bowen, Kerry McCarthy and Val Fisher and Health Care Assistant June Bridgeman.

Other nurses, such as CPNs (Community Psychiatric Nurses), Midwives, Health Visitors and District Nurses work with us and may often be found in our surgeries but they are employed by Coventry Community Health Services or by one of the hospitals.

Practice Nurses routine tasks include:

  • Providing advice and information about a range of health conditions and minor ailments, referring to other members of the clinical team.
  • Conducting new patient assessments
  • Holding clinics for a range of chronic diseases including diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and coronary heart disease.
  • Providing information and advice to patients on contraceptive methods and assisting GPs when fitting contraceptive devices.
  • Promoting and taking cervical smears
  • Taking blood and urine samples, other specimens and swabs.
  • Carrying out routine procedures such as ear syringing and wound management, applying and removing dressings and conducting electrocardiograms (ECGs)
  • Offering specialist information and advice in areas such as blood pressure, weight control, smoking cessation and lifestyle changes.
  • Carrying out childhood vaccinations and immunisations and other vaccinations such as HPV and Flu.
  • Providing travel health advice and travel vaccinations.
  • Assisting GPs in performing minor surgery.
  • Providing first aid and emergency treatment when necessary.
