Dr R B Girvan MB BS MRCGP DFSRH

Dr Girvan trained at St Mary’s Medical School, Paddington London and qualified in 1981.

Coming from a non medical background I was not certain in which area of medicine I would find my niche. During my training it was not long before I realised that general practice would offer the opportunities, challenges and variety I was seeking

After qualifying I moved slowly northwards, from London, completing my GP Vocational Training Scheme in Hertfordshire. Then I was offered a partnership in a well established practice in Foleshill.

I moved to Parkleys in 1997 and have been encouraged to develop my interest in GP education by becoming a GP Trainer. I have been involved in teaching doctors at many different stages of their careers, and it certainly keeps me on my toes.

In 2009 I became a Trainer for the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare and, with a number of other GPs, am developing a training programme, in this speciality, for local GP Trainees.

My other interests in general practice are Women’s Health, the Health of Children, Dermatology (skin) and Palliative Care. I was invited to become one of the trustees at Myton Hospice in 2009 and since then I have been involved in its continuing development.

I married when I was at medical school and have two teenage daughters and two dogs. I enjoy music, walking the dogs, and riding. I used to ride horses, but now I ride a motorbike when the weather is fine.
