Antidepressants

Medical Information

There has been a lot of media coverage following a recently published study into the effectiveness of SSRI drugs (antidepressants) in comparison to placebo drugs (dummy pills).

The Department of Medicines Management at Keele University has issued an information leaflet giving guidance to patients who may be concerned. The guidance is supported by Coventry Primary Care Trust and the Practice.

In summary:

  • Although the effect may be small there is a benefit to patients in taking the drugs as prescribed.
  • Patients, even if they feel well when they feel well, should not stop taking the medication without consulting their GP.
  • There can be side effects, known as "discontinuation symptoms" if the medication is ceased. These can sometimes be severe, particulalry if the drug is stopped suddenly.
